Hopscotch Single Family 01

This unique collaboration with local developer and contractor Hopscotch Construction involves the new construction of a 3BR, 2BA single-family home while utilizing the existing concrete slab and foundations of a former house. Located in a middle class, postwar neighborhood in a South Memphis neighborhood the team set out to provide harmonious contextual infill with contemporary design. This led to simple ‘salt box’ massing, use of the neighborhood’s materiality (i.e. red brick and clapboard white siding), and a tight roof line. Striking a balance between “standing out” and  completely blending in, the design compliments the 1940’s / 50’s construction typical in this neighborhood and subtly turn heads. Stacked bond brick highlights the entry and vertically oriented lap siding is employed around the building base for textural accents.

Once inside, a symmetrical vaulted space frames the dining, kitchen, and living room providing a heightened spatial experience and additional natural light while maintaining a sense of the traditional home. This vaulted ceiling is simply framed by modifying the bottom chord of a standard prefabricated roof truss with little added cost. A flexible, enlarged galley kitchen is situated between the living and dining rooms providing flexibility and potential user customization. In addition to bringing elevated design solutions, the team collaborated with the Healthy Materials Lab at the Parsons School of Design to provide healthy and sustainable material alternatives to affordable housing.
